wollewei

healthcare

In the restructured Malvert district in Nijmegen, we find this small-scale protected residence for people with dementia. Wollewei has a special shape; two open arms that both welcome and protect.

The 24 care homes are divided into four residential groups of six homes each, spread over two floors. Each house has its own internal facade with a wide access to the communal rooms and outdoor space. There are also private outdoor areas with raised balustrades, so that residents can be outside independently.

In consultation with the client and occupant, a compact structure was sought, with a balance between open and closed. In this way, the care staff keeps a good view of the residents. And the latter experiences the greatest possible feeling of freedom. This balance between freedom and protection is enhanced by a wandering area with an inner garden. The open sightlines create a spacious feeling. The outside of the building is characterized by surfaces with large, closed facades that let the masses speak beautifully.

Within the Malvert district, Wollewei was given a quiet, secluded place because of the target group. The area around the care homes also functions as a walking area. Much attention has been paid to colorful planting that follows the seasons and good walkways around the property. This means that not only the protected interior of Wollewei is a pleasant place to stay, but also the public outdoor space.
