Kraaiveld Estate is a place steeped in history in the municipality of Altena. The first reference to this estate, along with a few unique features, can be found in a deed dated June 8, 1358. Over 600 years and many deeds later, a portion came into the possession of the client. After the most recent redevelopment, Mr. Rouss had the opportunity to build a detached house. His brief: design and realize a home that respects the historical context, with the appearance of a fortress, yet simultaneously offering plenty of light, air, space, and other modern qualities.

The location is a peninsula and, viewed from above, resembles the inverse of a fort island. The enclosed sides are turned inward, while the outdoor spaces and views are directed outward. From its prominent position at the front of the site, Residence Rouss serves as the gatekeeper of the island. A notable detail of this project is that Mr. Rouss contributed to the construction himself.

The fortress-like character of the building is reinforced by the stony plinth, consisting of large portals built from masonry. A wooden structure creates access to a viewpoint. The portals are supported by concrete beams. By surrounding the building with generous windows and entrances from the foundation up to the concrete beams, the client’s desired bright, spacious interiors are realized, while the modern building still harmonizes with its centuries-old surroundings. Residence Rouss belongs on this site and nowhere else.
