Since the opening of the Spoorpark in Tilburg in 2017, the mutual impact of the park and the city on one another has become evident. The canopy, which is part of the building housing Scouting Esjeeka and the kiosk, also functions as the backdrop of the water square.
However, the success of the canopy also brought challenges. It quickly became a popular gathering spot for loitering youths, whose presence and behavior at times claimed the space. In a city park designed for all residents, this situation required a thoughtful approach.
By involving the community once again in finding a solution, a pragmatic and flexible design was ultimately chosen. Storage units were added to the rear of the canopy, making that side no longer accessible for general use. The front remained available to park visitors, but with the option to close off the space using scissor gates in the recognizable Spoorpark colors. This preserved the continuous rhythm of the column structure and maintained visual contact with the space behind it. Inside the canopy, a tiered seating area was constructed using gray birch concrete plywood. This seating connects a stage with viewing space, giving the area a multifunctional character.
The result is a space that balances openness and intimacy, fitting the park’s dynamic. A solution that aligns with the Spoorpark’s vision: a meeting place where everyone can feel at home—now and in the future.
